The concept of family is the bedrock of Chinese society. Owning to the one-child policy, which has only recently been relaxed, young children tend to be exceptionally doted on by their parents and grandparents. In terms of furniture design and production, this means that practically every Chinese design-led furniture brand, from 8 Hours and Lost & Found to Maxmarko and Thurdesign, has innovative piece in its product line specifically intended for children. Often these pieces have come about because the designers initially created them for their own children, and only subsequently put them into production.

This focus on child-centred design has also inspired the founding of a dew dedicated children’s furniture brands of which Hamuoo is one of the most interesting and high-profile. Adhering to principles of ‘refinement and simplicity’, Hamuoo creates child-size furniture of refreshing originality and playfulness. Especially noteworthy is its range of diminutive chairs, which take the form of different Chinese zodiac animals, including Mini Monkey, Clever Rat, Diligent Ox, Brave Tiger, Astute Rabbit, Flying Dragon and Agile Snake. Hamuoo uses a combination of hardwoods accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) – namely, North American black walnut, American hard maple and American red cherry – and ingeniously contrasts the colours of these woods to create its characterful piece, which are constructed using traditional Chinese mortise and tenon joints. Exemplifying contemporary Chinese woodcraft at its best, Hamuoo’s designs have an endearing innocence that invites imaginative creative play.
